a character in a tale of Charles Perrault, who killed several wives in turn for disobeyng his order to avoid a locked room, which contained the bodies of previous wives. Local tradition on Brittany identifies him with Gilles de Rais (1400-40), a repretator of atrocites, although he had only one wife (who left him).
